Squirrels Explore the Coast

This week, Squirrels Class explored the coastline and learnt to distinguish between physical and human features.

We learnt that physical features are natural parts of the coast. For example, we looked at caves, cliffs, beaches and the sea. We discussed how these features are formed naturally over time through processes such as erosion and weathering.

We also learnt about human features, which are built by people. These included promenades, sea defences and lighthouses. We talked about how these structures help protect the coast and support the people who live and work nearby.

We then focused on lighthouses and learnt about their important role in keeping ships safe. We discovered how lighthouses use powerful lights to guide sailors and warn them of dangerous rocks or shallow waters, especially at night or during stormy weather.

It was wonderful to see the children using their new vocabulary confidently and making thoughtful comparisons between natural and man-made features of the coastline.
