It was a blistering hot day and both the A & B team had to play two matches straight off. The B team had the misfortune to be drawn against two other A Teams and Filleigh B Team. They lost two matches and drew in the other. All the players gave it their absolute best and Umberleigh has some really promising up and coming talent. For some of the children it was their first experience of a tournament and with 12 other teams present it can be quite daunting. However they coped admirably and we were very proud of them.
The A team won all the matches in their pool and secured a place in the semi finals. This was against Chittlehampton, who were a strong (and very tall!) team. All the girls played so well, but I have to make a special mention of Chloe and Elsa who worked brilliantly together to make formidable defence. The match went in to extra time followed by sudden death. Kerry, under immense pressure, scored a fantastic goal from the edge of the circle which clinched the place in the final. The final took place in the middle of the day in furious heat, and despite a gallant effort by the girls they were runners up to Bishops Nympton who won 2-0. Well done girls.
Finally, it was noted that Umberleigh were the ONLY teams (bar one in the semi final) who shook hands and thanked the umpires after every match. They were quick and generous with their ‘three cheers’ and proved a real credit to the school. Well done all of you.
To the Yr 6 girls I want to say that it has been a pleasure to work with you over the last 18 months, keep up your enthusiasm and commitment and get along to that netball training. To the B team: I look forward to continue working with you (and others!) next term. Debbie Thorne.
